THE STUDENT'S HANDBOOK

Discipline

We expect children to behave as you would have them conduct themselves if you were visiting or entertaining friends or relatives. Children are expected to be well-mannered, courteous and respectful of others.

Teachers are not expected to teach children who will not conform to a reasonable standard of discipline.

The Board has directed all the schools to have a Code of Behaviour. Ours identifies positive strategies for promoting good behaviour, outlines a procedure for managing poor behaviour and identifies specific groups of misbehaviour.

Unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Some examples are: serious fighting, challenging, ignoring or flaunting the authority of the teacher, threatening the safety of the school or any student, extortion or intimidation, school bus incidents and disregard for the Dress Code. Records are kept and parents are informed of what is happening and what can be done to resolve the problem.

Inappropriate behaviour occurs from time-to-time, when children forget the rules of good deportment. We have identified obscene or abusive language or gestures, disruptive behaviour, property damage, stealing, habitual neglect of studies as examples. Occasional transgressions are dealt with informally in the spirit of community reminders.

Recurrent and persistent problems are recorded and a file is kept for future reference. The Code is reviewed and revised annually by a committee of parents, students and teachers. A complete copy is available to any parent upon request.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN ABSTRACT FROM BOARD
POLICY ON TRANSPORTATION.

It must be understood that the right of a student to ride a school bus is not a vested right, but a privilege which may be revoked for continuing misbehaviour.

The principal of the school which a student attends, is responsible for the student from the time of entering the bus until let off at a designated location. This responsibility includes the safety of the children and any disciplinary action considered necessary. Infractions of the rules are to be reported by the driver of the bus to the principal.

Students are to conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times.

Students may be designated to a particular seat on a set seating pattern.

No scuffling, fighting, littering or loud, boisterous or profane language will be tolerated.

Students may not get off the bus at other than their normal places of departure unless the driver is given a signed note from the principal authorizing a deviation.

The bus driver is in charge of the bus. Students have a direct responsibility to obey.
