Hampton-Baldwin
On 28 Jul 1920, at high
noon, James Ashley Hampton and Jessie Gertrude Baldwin were united
in marriage. The spacious new farm home of Mr. and Mrs. A. W.
Baldwin, the bride's parents, in Villa Nova, was the scene of the
ceremony.
The house was tastefully
decorated. One corner of the living room had been converted into a
bower of ferns and yellow daisies. Here the ceremony was
performed. The yellow and gold color scheme was carried out
through the various rooms.
The bride came down the
stairs preceded by little Mary Hare, as flower girl, carrying a
beautiful bouquet of bride's roses and dressed in white crepe de
chine trimmed with pearls.
Miss Baldwin, one of
Ontario's talented young teachers, made a charming appearance. The
groom, who has seen much service overseas, was dressed in
conventional black.
Following the Lohengrin
wedding march, played by Mrs. F. G. Oakes, the impressive ring
ceremony was performed and the nuptials pronounced by Rev. H. C.
Newcombe, of the Baptist Church, Simcoe, of whose church both
young people are active members.
After the congratulations,
a fine vocal selection was rendered by Miss Maude V. Fleming.
The 65 invited guests
consisted of the direct relatives and close friends of the bride
and groom. The sumptuous wedding dinner and after dinner speeches,
the latter led by Rev. Mr. Newcombe, ably assisted by Rev. Mr.
Lamb of Villa Nova, were features of satisfaction and pleasure.
The bride was the
recipient of many beautiful and useful presents. Her traveling
costume was of wool poplin with a hat to match.
Accompanied by a joyful
bevy of young people in automobiles, and escorted by Mr. Joseph
Cridland, M.M.P., uncle of the bride, the newly wedded pair drove
to Brantford , where they took train to Toronto and other places
on their honeymoon tour.
